Located in Cherrapunji Nohkalikai Falls is one of the major tourist attractions in Meghalaya. With a height of 1100 ft, it is the highest waterfall in India. You have to drive through a high tableland and hike a small distance before you arrive at the vantage point. From here you can have a perfect panoramic view of the Nohkalikai Falls cascading into the huge pool below. There are stairs also that take you to other viewpoints. The lush green surrounding and the steep falls will leave you in the awe of it.

Though an epitome of natural beauty, Nohkalikai Falls is associated with a depressing story. Nohkalikai translates to 'Leap of Ka Likai'. As per the legend, Ka Likai was a young woman with a loving daughter. After her husband passed away, she decided to remarry so that her daughter can have the love of a father. Her second husband however hated her daughter as Ka Likai would spend all the time looking after her.

Once when she was away for work, her husband slaughtered her daughter and cooked her flesh as a meal. When Ka Likai returned home she got happy that her husband cooked a meal for her and was at peace thinking that her daughter might be playing outside. After having the meal, she later found the fingers of her daughter in a betel nut basket. On discovering about the gory act of her husband she was plunged in guilt and remorse for her dead daughter. Due to the loss of the will to live she rushed to the nearby cliffs and threw herself down. Thus, the waterfall came to be known as Nohkalikai Falls.
